Anatomy of a Poem

Anatomy of a Poem

Overview

This interactive exhibition experience is inspired by Seamus Heaney’s words, rhythm and rhyme. Children will learn about poetic techniques through a variety of activities. By the end of their time at Seamus Heaney HomePlace, participants will have the structure to write their own poem based on their favourite memories just as Seamus Heaney did.

Learning Objectives

While taking part in the exhibition experience students will:

  • learn about Seamus Heaney’s life as a young boy and later as a poet
  • hear the stories of the people and places which inspired Seamus Heaney
  • identify, understand and use poetic terminology when discussing a poem
  • participate in discussions
  • read aloud to the group from prepared texts, including those composed by themselves, using inflection to assist meaning
  • consider, interpret and discuss texts, exploring the ways in which language can be manipulated in order to affect the reader or engage attention
  • use a variety of stylistic features to create mood and effect
