A Summer of Creativity, Discovery and Fun at Seamus Heaney HomePlace

From arts and crafts workshops and outdoor walks to podcasting, drama and film activities, there is something for all ages to enjoy at Seamus Heaney HomePlace this summer.

Running throughout July and August, the summer education programme is packed with opportunities for children, young people, families and adults to learn new skills, explore their creativity and make lasting memories together.

Young visitors can enjoy drop-in arts and crafts sessions at a reduced rate in the Creative Learning Zone at Seamus Heaney HomePlace, alongside free indoor play featuring reading, colouring and Lego activities, as well as seaside-inspired workshops where children can design and decorate tote bags and create Leporello-style fold-out seashell booklets.

This summer’s programme also features a range of exciting specialist workshops. Award-winning children’s author and illustrator Paul Howard will lead a storytelling and illustration session celebrating the 25th anniversary of Jill Tomlinson’s classic The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark, while WheelWorks’ PodCamp gives teenagers the opportunity to learn the basics of podcasting using professional equipment.

Young performers can build confidence through singing, dancing and acting in the five-day Backstage Pass drama programme led by Ciara McGeown of CMAC Creative Arts and Wellbeing, while Cinemagic’s SFX Make-Up workshop with multi-award-winning make-up artist Connie McGrath offers participants the chance to explore the tricks behind movie magic – and even create their own edible fake blood!

As Seamus Heaney HomePlace celebrates its tenth anniversary, poetry remains at the heart of the learning programme. This summer will see the launch of the first Summer Poetry Lab, inviting young writers to explore Seamus Heaney’s work through reading, discussion and creative writing, while developing confidence in their own creative voices.

Niamh McNally, poet and educational facilitator at Seamus Heaney HomePlace, said:

“Poetry invites us to pay closer attention to the world around us and the experiences that shape who we are. Through the Summer Poetry Lab, we hope young people will explore Seamus Heaney’s work, experiment with language and discover confidence in their own creative voices. As HomePlace celebrates its tenth anniversary, it feels especially meaningful to inspire a new generation of writers. As Heaney himself said, ‘If you have the words, there’s always a chance that you will find the way.’”

Beyond the creative workshops, visitors can also embrace the outdoors with Strand Strollers, a welcoming buggy walk for parents and carers with little ones, and Senior Strolls for older adults at The Strand at Lough Beg, offering opportunities to enjoy fresh air, connect with others and experience the beauty of this special landscape.

Sarah Cullen, Education Officer at Seamus Heaney HomePlace, said:

“At Seamus Heaney HomePlace, we believe creativity has the power to inspire confidence, spark imagination and bring people together. This year’s Summer Education Programme reflects that spirit, offering a wide range of activities that encourage people of all ages to explore new interests, develop skills and connect with others.”

Whether you are looking to try something new, nurture a lifelong passion or simply enjoy quality time together, there is a place for you at Seamus Heaney HomePlace this summer.
