Programme details:

Led by our Education Officer, Angeline Kelly, and Visitor Experience Guide, Marie McGuckin, this series combines guided walks, relaxed conversations, and creative writing sessions, each deeply rooted in Bellaghy’s landscapes and stories.

Tuesday 29th July – Village Life & Memoir

We begin at Seamus Heaney HomePlace with an introduction before setting out on a walk around Bellaghy’s built heritage. From St. Tidas Church of Ireland graveyard to the Turfman and Bellaghy Bawn, Marie will share local history and connections to Seamus Heaney. Inspired by what you see, smell, hear, and touch, you will return to HomePlace and write your own memoir piece either in prose or poem form.

Thursday 31st July – Bogs, Seamus Heaney & Ballymacombs More Woman

Our journey continues to the Strand at Lough Beg, where you will engage with the natural landscape, recording what you see, hear and touch, and learn more about its local history and connection to Seamus Heaney. Afterwards, you will return to HomePlace to learn about the fascinating story of the Ballymacombs More Woman through a special film screening in the Helicon Theatre. You will also explore ethical questions surrounding this Iron Age discovery, before crafting your own poem inspired by this ancient inhabitant.

Tuesday 5th August – Poems of Work and Industry
Travel to Castledawson and the Moyola River to explore the area’s rich agricultural and industrial history – from railways to linen mills. Back at HomePlace, you will take part in a creative writing session centered on the theme of ‘work,’ inspired by Seamus Heaney’s iconic poem ‘Digging’. Here, you will write about your own experiences or memories of work.

Thursday 7th August – Finale

Our final session focuses on editing and sharing your work with the group. Participants are invited to read their pieces aloud in a supportive environment. Friends and family are welcome to join from 12pm for the programme finale in the Helicon Theatre. We will also read the work of local writers or writers who have written works about Bellaghy and the surrounding area.
