Pauline Hasson: A Gift Purchased

October 05, 2016

I never had the pleasure of meeting Seamus Heaney, but my father told this story often.

Hasson Bros, Main Street Dungiven. Seamus, Robbie and Niall, tailors and drapers. Seamus was travelling home from Derry when he suddenly remembered that it was his good wife's birthday. As he had not bought her a gift, he stopped in Hasson'ss shop to buy something. Being a man's shop mainly, there were few items suitable other than an apron or a head scarf. Feeling that the scarf was most suitable, he purchased one gladly and continued on his way, gift in hand.
