At Home Educational Activities
Need some educational activities for your children while at home?
Over the next few weeks, Seamus Heaney HomePlace will be posting literacy-based activities that can be done at home. Please feel free to share these posts with friends, parents, teachers and anyone else that may find them useful.
Our third literacy based activity is inspired by Seamus Heaney’s poem ‘Digging’.
Please feel free to share these posts with friends, parents, teachers and anyone else that may find them useful.
In the poem ‘Digging’, Seamus Heaney writes about watching his father digging in the garden.
‘Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests; snug as a gun.
Under my window, a clean rasping sound
When the spade sinks into gravelly ground:
My father, digging.’
Write a poem or create a piece of art about spending time outdoors with someone you love. It could be gardening, playing sports or even going for a walk– it’s up to you!
Here are some hints to help you write your own poem. You should try to include:
1. A spadeful of words (main ingredient)
2. A scattering of rhyme – words that sound the same
3. A shoot of rhythm – words can sound fast or they can d r a g
4. Water with alliteration – string together words which have the same first letter or sound at the beginning
Post your poems or art to our Facebook page HERE or email them to: firstname.lastname@example.org we would love to see them.
